Report on the Christadelphian Shunem Home
Kismatpur,
In December 2007, we were able to visit the Shunem Home and spend a few days there during the Christmas period. We are able to report that the Home is thriving with a full complement of children and elderly residents. There are 56 children and 17 elderly residents, many of the children have been resident for several years and are now beginning to think of further education and their future life before God.
The Christadelphian Shunem Home exists to provide a home for the children of leprosy patients and for elderly brothers, sisters and those in need of residential care. We have children, residents and staff from a wide range of background, culture and faith but all share in learning about the Bible and true Christian Faith.
During the past year, several members of staff have been replaced by others so that the work is progressing satisfactorily. We have a resident Administrator, Bro Ravi, the Home Manager, Sis Jenni and they are assisted by a cook and staff, care assistants for the children and a nurse for the elderly residents. We also have a range of ancillary staff such as drivers, cleaners and ground staff etc.
The site has now matured and provides a very pleasant environment with many trees and attractive flowers. The buildings have been maintained satisfactorily and during the past year have been painted inside and out. The buildings are in use for a range of activities as well as the normal residents; for conferences, providing accommodation for a range of visitors etc. They therefore have to stand-up to a high degree of wear and tear as well as the vagaries of the Indian climate - extreme heat in the summer followed by theĀ monsoon rains. Yet despite all of this, the building provides a unique environment for the residents at Shunem. A climbing frame has been constructed on site in the past year and is really enjoyed by the younger children.
