back to Fellowship Weekend

Slimbridge 2004

This was the year that we prepared ourselves for the building of our new hall. We thought it was just as important to be equipped spiritually as much as it was financially, to have a spiritual blueprint for our church - the people - as it was to have plans for the building.

So we looked to two Old Testament prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, in our studies to see how they encouraged the Israelites to build a temple in Jerusalem after them all returned from captivity.

In workshops we made things we would like to see in the new hall, like clocks and paintings and thought about how Bible characters prepared themselves for tasks God wanted them to take on through prayer and praise. It was in the former of these we discovered that Nehemiah (who set about rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem just before Haggai and Zechariah started their work) chose a man to be the "director of prayer" during the project. We took this example and appointed someone to help lead and encourage our prayers. This has been a feature of our community ever since.

Other activities included a walk along the canal, learning a version of "What a friend we have in Jesus" sung by our brothers and sisters in Kenya and giving prizes to members of our Sunday school.
